How it works
Four steps, and two of them happen at your old registrar
A transfer is a handover between registrars, agreed by the registry that runs the extension. Nothing here needs a developer.
Unlock the domain
Sign in where the domain is registered today and turn off the registrar lock (sometimes called the transfer lock or theft protection). While it is on, the registry refuses every transfer request.Get the authorization code
Ask that registrar for the authorization code — also written EPP code, auth code or transfer key. It is usually in the domain's settings page, or emailed to the address on the registration.Start the transfer here

A confirmation goes to the administrative address on the domain. Approve it and the handover completes; until somebody approves it, the transfer sits and waits. Check the spam folder if it has not arrived.
During the transfer
What happens to your website and your email
The short answer: nothing, unless you ask for it. A transfer moves the registration, not the contents.
Your files and mailboxes stay where they are
A transfer changes which company manages the registration of the name. It does not copy website files, databases or mailboxes. If the site is hosted elsewhere today, it is still hosted there the day after the transfer completes.
Your nameservers are not changed
The transfer leaves the nameservers on the domain as they are, so the DNS records that send visitors to your site and mail to your inbox keep answering while it runs. Nothing has to be changed in DNS for the handover itself.
You move the hosting when you are ready
Once the domain is in your client area, you change the nameservers or DNS records whenever it suits you — the same evening, or months later. Moving the website itself is a separate job, and website transfer covers the files, databases and email.

What a transfer costs
You pay the transfer price for the extension when you start the transfer. After that the name renews at the renewal price for its extension. Both figures are per year, in US dollars.

Whether the transfer adds a year to the registration you already paid for depends on the extension and its registry. Ask us with the domain name before you start and we will confirm what happens to your current expiry date.

Can I transfer a domain I registered somewhere else?
Yes. Start the transfer from the domain transfer page in the Hostinium billing area and we handle the technical steps. Each extension has its own transfer price, listed alongside the registration and renewal prices.
Is the renewal price the same as the registration price?
Not always. Most extensions renew at the price they register for, but .com, .net, .org, .me and .biz renew slightly higher. Every extension's registration, renewal and transfer price is listed side by side so you can see the difference before you buy.
